The student must show that they are committed to their studies. If we feel that the study sessions are not suited to a student due to concentration or distraction levels, students will be removed from study sessions if they reach step 3 of warnings explained below.<\/p><p><b>All students must abide by the following Academy rules:<\/b><\/p><ul><li>Students must follow all social distancing guidelines and signs that are in place<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li>Absolutely NO TALKING during study sessions.<\/li><li>A bell system will be used to signal the start and end of study sessions and breaks. Once the students hear this bell they must stop and listen to the Supervisor\u2019s instructions who is on duty. When the bell indicates the start of a study session all students must stop talking from this point onward, go to their assigned study desk area and commence their study.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li>Mobile phones are not allowed during study sessions. They must be SWITCHED OFF and then left on the \u2018mobile home unit\u2019 as soon as students arrive at the Academy. Students must not forget to collect their mobile before they leave. The Academy cannot take responsibility for mobile phones which are left behind.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li>Bad behaviour, including back answering, will not be tolerated.<\/li><li>No headphones allowed<\/li><li>Students MUST NOT disturb others<\/li><li>Students must arrive on time and may join or leave study sessions ONLY at official break times.<\/li><li>Students must be organised and are not allowed to move around during sessions (unless they are using the toilet facilities, bean bags or computer area)<\/li><li>Students are expected to maintain the toilets in a clean and sanitary condition. Please report to the Supervisor if the toilet lacks toilet paper, liquid soap, if the hand dryers are not working or if any other issues arise.<\/li><li>Students must always follow instructions given by any supervisor.<\/li><li>Students are responsible for all of their own belongings including their mobile phones.<\/li><li>Students must return all educational library resources once finished with them for other students to be able to avail of them also<\/li><li>Students must keep the area around their desks clean, use the correct labelled bins provided <b><i>(waste\/recycling\/paper)<\/i><\/b> and must not write on desks. They must keep their study area free of discarded paper, pencil parings etc.<\/li><li>Students must not eat at their study desks (including chewing gum)<\/li><li><i>\u2018<\/i><b><i>The Carlow Academy\u2019<\/i><\/b> is not responsible for any students who leave the premises early or during the break, however we do have an absentee text service if parents wish to avail of this.<\/li><li>Students may use an I-pad or a laptop during study sessions once they are used solely for study and educational purposes.<\/li><li>Computer facilities are on site and can be booked in advance for a maximum of 30 minutes per student. This should be booked at least 24 hours in advance.<\/li><li>Students are not permitted to smoke or have\/take drugs on the Academy premises.<\/li><li>Students are expected to have due regard for the residents of surrounding streets such as Charlotte Street and not engage in, initiate or support loud or aggressive behaviour of any description that could be construed as disruptive or destructive.<\/li><\/ul><p><b>AFTER SCHOOL STUDY<\/b><\/p><p>Students can come straight from their respective schools to our facility where they will have their own dedicated desk for each term. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>SAFE &amp; SECURE<\/b><\/p><p>At <b><i>\u2018The Carlow Academy\u2019<\/i><\/b> we will provide each student with a safe, secure and spacious environment to study and learn.<\/p><p><b> <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><\/b><b>3 STEP WARNING PROCEDURE<\/b><\/p><p><b>If there are any problems with a student the following steps will be taken and will be documented throughout each step:<\/b><\/p><p><b>Step 1)<\/b> He \/ She will be given one verbal warning.<\/p><p><b>Step 2)<\/b> The student\u2019s parent will be contacted and notified of steps 1 &amp; 2 issues.<\/p><p><b>Step 3)<\/b> If the problem persists the student will be asked to leave the Academy. Any student who is asked to leave will not be permitted to return. Parent(s)\/Guardian(s) will be informed <b>and<\/b> no refunds will be made in respect of this final decision.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b><i>\u2018The Carlow Academy\u2019 Payment Terms and Conditions<\/i><\/b><\/p><ul><li><b><i>Study &amp; Grinds Payment Policy:<\/i><\/b>\u00a0All fees for study must be paid in full (Package 1-full membership) <b>OR<\/b> one week in advance of each term (Packages 2-6\uf0e0alternative full membership packages) to secure your place. Full membership only applies to 1-6 study packages.\u00a0\u00a0<b>Fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable.<\/b><b> <\/b>We do not allow for absenteeism.\u00a0<\/li><li><b><i>The Carlow Academy<\/i> reserves the right <u>to cancel a grinds class in the event that there are less than 3 students<\/u> in the class.\u00a0<\/b><\/li><\/ul><p><b><i>Deposits:<\/i><\/b>\u00a0Deposits are non- refundable and non-transferrable.<\/p><p><b><i>Courses, Workshops &amp; Holiday Study:<\/i><\/b>\u00a0Payment for courses, workshops or holiday study is non-refundable and non-transferrable. There is no allowance for absenteeism. Payment may be transferable to other services if we are notified of the cancellation with over 14 days notice before the event.<\/p><p><b><i>Absenteeism:<\/i><\/b>\u00a0We do not allow for absenteeism in grinds, courses or supervised study packages. All fees must be paid in full at the beginning of term. If a student is unable to make a grind, the tutor will keep a copy of the notes and exam questions for students.<\/p><p><b><i>Cancellation policy:<\/i><\/b><i>\u00a0<\/i>There is a cancellation fee of \u20ac10 for Friday or Saturday Study if a student cancels within 24 hours of the study sessions. This only applies to Pay As You Go students.<\/p><p><b><i>Members:<\/i><\/b><i>\u00a0<\/i>Current full membership students will receive preference for all holiday studies and courses throughout the year [i.e. students who avail of any of the study packages 1-6 and of the grinds packages 1-6].<\/p><p><strong>CHILD PROTECTION POLICY<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>@ \u2018<em>The Carlow Academy\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Introduction<\/strong> <br \/>The Child Care Act (1991), Children\u2019s Act 2001 and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1992), enshrine in law the paramount principle of the welfare of children. They were designed to promote the welfare and protection of children (0 \u2013 18 years). The Acts cover the rights and responsibilities of parents, the protection of children in emergencies, children in care, the supervision of pre-schools and the duty of the Health Service Executive (HSE) to promote the welfare of children who are not receiving adequate care and protection. In 2004 \u201cChild Protection Guidelines for Post Primary Schools\u201d, updated in 2011, was published by the Department of Health and Science and offers support and guidance to people who come into regular contact with children, and who are, therefore, in a position of responsibility in recognising and responding to possible child abuse. Legislative Basis for policy &#8211; Child Care Act 1991 &#8211; Children\u2019s Act 2001 &#8211; Education Act 1998 &#8211; Education and Welfare Act 2000 &#8211; Protection for Persons Reporting Child Abuse 1998 &#8211; Freedom of Information Act 1997\/2003 Copies of these acts can be found at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.education.ie\/\">http:\/\/www.education.ie<\/a>. This Child Protection Policy is drawn up in conjunction with these acts and guidelines. At <strong>\u2018<em>The Carlow Academy\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, the safety and protection of the child is of paramount importance in all situations.<\/p><p><strong>General Purpose Statement<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>\u2018<em>The Carlow Academy\u2019 <\/em><\/strong>seeks to provide a safe and secure environment for the children who participate in our programmes and activities. By implementing the below practices, our goal is to protect the children of <strong>\u2018<em>The Carlow Academy\u2019 <\/em><\/strong>from incidents of misconduct or inappropriate behaviour while also protecting our staff and volunteers (workers) from false accusations.<\/p><p><strong>Definitions<\/strong><\/p><p>For purposes of this policy, the terms \u201cChild\u201d or \u201cChildren\u201d include all persons under the age of eighteen (18) years old. The term \u201cWorker\u201d includes both paid and unpaid persons who work with children. The term \u201cVolunteer\u201d means anyone in a daycare or school, in overnight activities involving minors, in counselling of minors, or in one-on-one mentoring of minors.<\/p><p><strong>Selection of Workers<\/strong><\/p><p>All persons who desire to work with the children participating in our programmes and activities will be screened. This screening will include the following;<\/p><ol><li><strong>a) <\/strong><u>Garda Vetting and Teaching Council number <\/u><\/li><li><strong>b) <\/strong><u>Written Application<\/u> \u2013 All persons seeking to work with children must complete and sign a written application in a form to be supplied by us. The application will request basic information from the applicant and will inquire into previous experience with children, reference and employment information, as well as the disclosure of any previous criminal convictions. The application form will be maintained in confidence<\/li><li><strong>c) <\/strong><u>Personal Interview<\/u> \u2013 Upon completion of the application, a face to face interview may be scheduled with the applicant to discuss his\/her suitability for the position.<\/li><li><strong>d) <\/strong><u>Reference Checks<\/u> \u2013 Before the applicant is permitted to work with children, at least two of the applicants\u2019 references will be checked. These references should be of an institutional\u00a0\u00a0 nature as opposed to personal or family references, preferably from organisations where the applicant has worked with children in the past.<\/li><\/ol><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Responding To Allegations of Child Abuse<\/strong><\/p><p>For purposes of this policy, \u201cChild Abuse\u201d is any action (or lack of action) that endangers or harms a child\u2019s physical, psychological or emotional health and development. Child abuse occurs in different ways and includes the following;<\/p><ol><li><strong>a) <\/strong><u>Physical Abuse<\/u> \u2013 any physical injury to a child that is not accidental, such as beating, shaking, and burns or biting.<\/li><li><strong>b) <\/strong><u>Emotional Abuse<\/u> \u2013 emotional injury when the child is not nurtured or provided with love and security, such as an environment of constant criticism, belittling and persistent teasing.<\/li><li><strong>c) <\/strong><u>Sexual Abuse<\/u> \u2013 any sexual activity between a child and an adult or between a child and another child at least 4 years older than the victim.<\/li><li><strong>d) <\/strong><u>Neglect<\/u> \u2013 depriving a child of his\/her essential needs, such as adequate food, water, shelter and medical care.<\/li><\/ol><p>Supervisors may have the opportunity to become aware of abuse or neglect of the children under our care. In the event that an individual involved in the care of the children at <strong>\u2018<em>The Carlow Academy\u2019 <\/em><\/strong>becomes aware of suspected abuse or neglect of a child under his\/her care, this should be reported immediately to the Director of Education and Studies, Mr Niall Murphy, for further action and reported to the authorities as may be mandated by state law. Niall is a mandated person for TUSLA-Child and Family Agency.<\/p><p>In the event that an incident of abuse or neglect in alleged to have occurred at <strong>\u2018<em>The Carlow Academy\u2019 <\/em><\/strong>or during our sponsored programmes or activities, the following procedure shall be followed;<\/p><ol><li><strong>a) <\/strong>The parent\/guardian of the child will be notified.<\/li><li><strong>b) <\/strong>The worker or member alleged to be the perpetrator of the abuse or misconduct will immediately be placed on leave pending an investigation and instructed to remain away from the premises during the investigation. He or She should be instructed to have no contact with the victim or with witnesses.<\/li><li><strong>c) <\/strong>All allegations of abuse should be reported to the civil authorities, and the organisation will comply with the state\u2019s requirements regarding mandatory reporting of abuse as the law then exists. The organisation will fully cooperate with the investigation of the incident by the authorities.<\/li><li><strong>d) <\/strong>The insurance company will be notified, and the organisation will complete an incident report. Any documents received relating to the incident and\/or allegations will immediately be forwarded to the insurance company.<\/li><li><strong>e) <\/strong>The advice of legal counsel will be sought before responding to media inquiries or releasing information about the situation to the public. All other representation of the organisation should refrain from speaking to the media.<\/li><li><strong>f) <\/strong>Any person who is not found innocent of the alleged abuse or misconduct will be removed from their position working with children or youth.<\/li><\/ol><p><strong>Open Door Policy<\/strong><\/p><p>Classroom doors should remain open unless there is a window in the door or a side window beside it. Doors should never be locked while persons are inside the room.<\/p><p><strong>Teenage Workers<\/strong><\/p><p>We recognise that there may be times when we have work experience students (paid or volunteer) who are themselves under the age of 18 to assist in caring for children during programs or activities. The following guidelines apply to teenage workers;<\/p><ol><li><strong>a) <\/strong>Must be at least aged 16 and be Garda Vetted<\/li><li><strong>b) <\/strong>Must be screened as specified above<\/li><li><strong>c) <\/strong>Must be under the supervision of an adult and must never be left alone with children<\/li><\/ol><p><strong>Check In\/Check Out Procedure<\/strong><\/p><p>A security check in\/checkout procedure will be followed. The child will be signed in and signed out every day. We also adhere to keeping and updating daily attendance records which will be sent to parents at the end of every term or when requested.<\/p><p><strong>Sick Child Policy<\/strong><\/p><p>It is our desire to provide a healthy and safe environment for all of the children at <strong>\u2018<em>The Carlow Academy\u2019<\/em><\/strong>. Parents are encouraged to be considerate of other children when deciding whether to place a child under our care. In general, children with the following symptoms should NOT be dropped off;<\/p><ul><li>Fever, diarrhoea, or vomiting in the last 48 hours<\/li><li>Green or yellow runny nose<\/li><li>Eye or skin infections; and\/or<\/li><li>Other symptoms of communicable or infectious disease<\/li><\/ul><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Medications Policy<\/strong><\/p><p>It is the policy of <strong>\u2018<em>The Carlow Academy\u2019 <\/em><\/strong>not to administer either prescription or non-prescription medications to the children under our care. Medications should be administered by a parent at home. Parents are reminded about our Sick Child Policy.<\/p><p>Exceptions to the Medications Policy may be granted to parents of children with potentially life-threatening conditions (such as asthma or severe allergic reactions). Parents of such children should address their situation with <strong>\u2018<em>The Carlow Academy\u2019 <\/em><\/strong>to develop a plan of action.<\/p><p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Restroom\/Toilet Guidelines<\/strong><\/p><p>For the protection of all, workers should never be alone with a child in a bathroom with the door closed and never be in a closed bathroom stall with a child.\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>Accidental Injuries to Children<\/strong><\/p><p>In the event that a youth or child is injured while under our care, the following steps should be followed;<\/p><ol><li><strong>a) <\/strong>For minor injuries, scrapes, and bruises, workers will provide First Aid (band-aids, etc.) as appropriate and will notify the child\u2019s parent or guardian of the injury at the time when the child is picked up from our care.<\/li><li><strong>b) <\/strong>For injuries requiring medical treatment beyond simple First Aid, the parent and\/or guardian will immediately be summoned in addition to the worker\u2019s supervisor. If warranted by circumstance, an ambulance will be called.<\/li><li><strong>c) <\/strong>Once the child has received appropriate medical attention, an incident report will be completed in the case of injuries requiring treatment by a medical professional.<\/li><\/ol><p><strong>Training<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>\u2018<em>The Carlow Academy\u2019 <\/em><\/strong>will provide training on this Child Protection Policy to all new supervisors and will strive to provide opportunities for additional training classes or events on an annual basis. All workers are strongly encouraged to attend these training events.<\/p><p><strong>Child Protection Reporting Procedure<\/strong><\/p><p>The Designated Liaison Person (DLP) to deal with Child Protection concerns in this organisation is Mr Niall Murphy. Should this person be absent, for whatever reason, the Deputy Designated Liaison Person (DDLP) is Mr Matthew Hughes.
